Vlasta Silhavy, Head of BFA Theatre Certification
Vlasta Silhavy is the Head of the BFA Theatre Certification program at Texas State University. She currently teaches creative drama, theatre curriculum development, theatre in education, directing II for certs and directing theatre activities. Ms. Silhavy is also a member of the Texas State University C3 Advisory Board Committee. In addition to her teaching responsibilities, Ms. Silhavy served as the sponsor for the theatre co-ed fraternity, Alpha Psi Omega for five years. Since joining Texas State University in 2015, Ms. Silhavy has recently created the BFA Certification play reading club and also sponsors monthly workshops for future teachers. For the past 14 years, Ms. Silhavy has coordinated the Texas State University Summer Theatre Camp for high school students and continues to serve as the camp coordinator. She also coordinates the Theatre Education Conference every other year for theatre teachers across the state. Recently, Ms. Silhavy along with fellow colleague Ana Baer received funding through three grants in order to create a girls leadership and empowerment summer camp.
Before coming to Texas State University, Ms. Silhavy taught theatre, oral interpretation, and debate for eight years at Angleton High School. She also served as a UIL Academic Coordinator, Auditorium Supervisor, and Fine Arts Department Chair. While in Angleton she also served on many district committees such as the morale committee, personnel committee, Response to Intervention committee, and the campus leadership team.
Ms. Silhavy sponsored many school organizations including participation in UIL, TFA, NFL, and NCFL. During her time as a sponsor, she coached over 60 state qualifiers in various competitions primarily TFA and UIL. She also had the opportunity to coach over a dozen students who competed at national competitions across the country.
Ms. Silhavy is also an active member of the Texas Educational Theatre Association, and she served for two years as a TETA K-12 Board Member. Recently, she was named Angleton ISD's 2015 Secondary Teacher of the Year and a Region 4 Teacher of the Year finalist.
Ms. Silhavy is thrilled to be returning to her alma mater to serve as the Head of the BFA Theatre Certification program. She is looking forward to inspiring the next generation of outstanding educators.
